How to send files from an iPhone to a Windows PC

Short answer

If you have the cable and the file is large, use the cable — nothing beats it on speed or privacy. If both devices are on your own Wi-Fi, a local tool like LocalSend is the next best thing.

The cable and local tools are the two that stop being options on a restricted network or a computer you do not own. That is the gap the browser-based methods fill, and where todevice is worth a look.

The six options, compared

There is no single winner here. Which one is right depends almost entirely on the network you are on and whether you own the computer.

What each one is actually like

USB cable

Privacy:
Best available: nothing leaves the two devices
Watch out for:
You need the cable and physical access. iPhone photos may arrive as HEIC, which older Windows software cannot open. Some cables are charge-only and will not carry data.

iCloud or other cloud storage

Privacy:
The provider holds the file and, on most consumer plans, can read it
Watch out for:
Uses your storage quota. Sync can lag. Signing into a personal cloud account on a shared or borrowed PC is a bad idea and hard to undo.

Emailing it to yourself

Privacy:
Your mail provider stores it indefinitely
Watch out for:
The size cap rules out video almost immediately. It clutters your mailbox, and the file stays there long after you needed it.

Messaging apps (WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal)

Privacy:
Varies by app; several are end-to-end encrypted in transit
Watch out for:
Many apps silently recompress images and video, so what arrives is not what you sent. Send as a 'document' or 'file' where the app offers it.

Local network tools (LocalSend, Snapdrop, PairDrop)

Privacy:
Good: data stays on the local network
Watch out for:
Fails outright on campus, hotel and many office networks, which use client isolation. A VPN on either device breaks it too.

Encrypted in your browser before upload; the encrypted copy is deleted after delivery
Watch out for:
Bounded by your upload speed, so slower than a cable or a local tool when those are available. Not storage — transfers expire. 500 MB cap during the beta.

The HEIC problem, whichever method you pick

iPhones store photos as HEIC by default, and older Windows software often cannot open them. This catches people out after the transfer has apparently succeeded.

The simplest fix is on the phone: Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic, which converts to JPEG on the way out. If you would rather keep HEIC everywhere, set Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible to shoot JPEG in the first place.

How to choose in ten seconds

  • Own the PC, have a cable, big file? Cable.
  • Own both, same home Wi-Fi? LocalSend or similar.
  • Want the file kept anyway? Cloud storage.
  • Campus, hotel or office Wi-Fi, or a borrowed computer? A browser-based relay — see the guide to why local sharing fails on those networks.
  • Just one small document? Email it to yourself. It is not elegant, but it works and you are already signed in.
